Opener – Quick Expectations

Aim:

To explore participants’ expectations for the training session

Participants:

Any number

Time:

10/20 minutes

Materials:

  • Prepared flip charts (see point I of the procedure below)
  • Markers
  • Masking tape

Procedure:

I) Before the workshop, prepare a flip chart entitled “Expectations”. Divide up the paper with three horizontal lines. Write a sentence in each section: I) I am here because…; II) I hope that during the following days we shall…; and III) By the end of this workshop I would like to…

II) Get the participants to complete the first sentence (encourage participation). Write down the participants’ answers in the first section of the flip chart.

III) Repeat the procedure for each sentence.

IV) Review the participants’ answers and – based on the training agenda – clarify which expectations will be met during the training session, and those which will not.

Note:

This is a quick way to gather expectations that can be used when you don’t have much time or just want to maintain a swift flow. There are other activities for exploring participants’ expectations that provide for in-depth exploration. In this activity, keep participation open and don’t explore expectations in detail.
